Spring has Sprung: Should You DIY or Hire a Professional?

Now that the snow has melted, we all want to get outside as soon as possible to enjoy the warmer temperatures. Spring is also the time to hit the ground running to plan all of your outdoor projects. You know that you want to enjoy your outdoor spaces all summer long, but should you tackle your landscaping projects yourself or should you “branch out” and hire a professional? Before you make up your mind, first think about the kind of project you are planning. Are you looking to do some simple planting and pruning of your outdoor plants and flowers? If so, these  kinds of tasks may be manageable enough to handle on your own.

But if you’re thinking about undertaking a more extensive project, such as changing your overall landscape design or adding a new feature, such as an outdoor patio, fireplace, or stone wall, here are some things to consider:

Time – from simple planting and lawn clean-up to more complex projects, how much time do you estimate you can devote to these projects? Every outdoor improvement project can be time-consuming, but without a professional landscaping background, you should expect them to take a little longer. With such a short warm weather season In Maine, this is an important factor to keep in mind.

Cost – while you may save on the cost of labor if you choose to DIY, you should also be aware that materials may actually end up costing you more. Professionals can usually purchase materials at a discounted rate and can better estimate how much is needed for each project.

Tools & Equipment – do you have the proper tools and equipment for your project? It is important to research what you will need to get the job done right. If you need to purchase tools or rent equipment, this will be another added expense that needs to be factored in.

Skills – last but probably most importantly, be honest with yourself about whether you have the skills to complete each project and do it well. If you get stuck and can’t finish it yourself, or you don’t like the results, you’ll then have the added expense of hiring a contractor to fix your mistakes (you reap what you sow)!

While the DIY approach may sound like the cheaper, more convenient option, in the long run it might not be the best approach and may end up costing you more time and money. A landscape professional will have the specialized skills and tools to get you from your initial design or idea to a finished project in time to enjoy it all summer long.
